it’s Emily here!
Okay, confession time: when people used to talk about gut health, I rolled my eyes a little. It sounded like one of those wellness buzzwords. But the deeper I dug into the science — and honestly, after struggling with bloating and weird digestive issues myself — I realized our gut microbiome is basically the command center of our health.
Did you know that your gut is linked to your mood through something called the gut-brain axis? I swear, when my digestion is off, my mood tanks too. And I thought it was “just me,” but research shows your gut bacteria actually produce neurotransmitters like serotonin. Crazy, right?
Here’s another stat I stumbled on: the U.S. digestive health supplements market was valued at $13.5 billion in 2023 — and it’s expected to keep growing every year. Clearly, a lot of people are finally waking up to how important gut health really is.
For women specifically, it’s even more connected. An imbalanced gut microbiome can mess with nutrient absorption (think: iron, vitamin D, magnesium — all the things we need more of) and even hormonal balance. And yes, there’s evidence that gut bacteria and vaginal bacteria are “talking” to each other in some way.
For me, the “aha moment” was realizing that probiotics aren’t just about easing bloating after a heavy meal. They’re about setting up the foundation for so many systems in your body to function better.
So, now I’m that friend who says: “Hey, maybe try probiotics” whenever someone complains about digestion or recurring yeast issues. And honestly, I don’t even feel bad about it. We share makeup tips, why not microbiome tips too?
And as it could not be otherwise, take care of your health and always seek a health professional when necessary.
