Candida: What I Thought I Knew vs What’s Actually True

it’s Emily here!

Candida. Even the word used to make me cringe. If you’ve ever Googled it late at night (like I have 🙈), you know the internet is FULL of scary articles and horror stories.

But here’s what I learned after diving into the science: a lot of the stuff online is pure myth.

Myth #1: Candida takes over your whole body.
Not really. Candida lives naturally in all of us. It’s only when it grows out of balance that we feel the effects — like yeast infections or digestive discomfort.

Myth #2: Any probiotic helps.
Nope. Only certain strains like Lactobacillus rhamnosus and L. plantarum have been studied specifically for yeast balance.

Myth #3: It’s all about antifungal meds.
Sure, they help, but here’s the kicker: recurrence rates are super high. Which is why more and more research is looking at probiotics as a way to prevent future flare-ups.

Something that really stuck with me: globally, the estimated cost of recurrent yeast infections is around $14.4 billion a year in lost productivity and treatment costs (source: PubMed). That’s insane.

On a personal note, what helped me was learning not to panic. Yeast infections are common, and they don’t mean you’re “dirty” or did something wrong. But supporting your body with the right tools — like a probiotic that actually targets microbiome balance — can make a huge difference.

I still keep my diet in check (sugar can be a trigger), and I manage stress better, but adding a daily probiotic was the piece I was missing.

So here’s the truth: Candida isn’t the monster the internet makes it out to be. It’s part of us. The goal isn’t to eliminate it — it’s to keep it in balance. And that’s way more doable than I once thought.

This really is a problem where we need a health professional on our side, so take care of yourself!
